Campers in Red Leaf’s Outdoor Adventure and Leadership will study communication skills using real-life situations. For example, they will learn the importance of speaking up to their peers and superiors when they feel that others may be at danger.

They will study the tragic case of the space shuttle Challenger which blew up in 1986 just 73 seconds after lift-off despite warnings from some of the engineers to their superiors that there were potentially fatal engineering flaws.

challengerThe Challenger case is often used to highlight the dangers of Groupthink, which Wikipedia defines as a type of thought within a deeply cohesive in-group whose members try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas. Groupthink may cause groups to make hasty, irrational decisions, where individual doubts are set aside, for fear of upsetting the group’s balance.

An interesting fact came to light when I started to contact the young men and women who applied to work at our Culture Connection Camps.  A number of their families had been involved in previous years with our company through our international homestay program.

excursion-to-torontoAll these applicants admitted that since they and their families had enjoyed this program so much that they thought it would be worth their while to participate in another one of our programs. They felt that our day camps would be a great way to introduce young people to a variety of different cultures through fun and rewarding ways.

“I came to appreciate the importance and enjoyment of cultural exchanges like those Red Leaf provides. Our time..(with our visiting student) taught me the importance and value of sharing ones culture and customs with others. My family has hosted for Red Leaf…It was both a rewarding and learning experience.”

For the past month I have been busy interviewing a vast array of young women and men who have expressed a great interest in working for our Cultural Connection Camps. The common thread running through all these interviews was the fact that all the applicants have admitted to having a great love of working with children. A number of the applicants are planning to pursue a career in the educational field. As a retired school teacher, this was great to hear.

I was also impressed with the qualifications that the applicants possess. Some are studying kinesiology at Guelph and Queen’s, several speak at least 2 languages, a number have been camp counsellors already or have taken leadership courses. One of them is studying drama at Sheridan College and others expressed a passion for cooking. I have also interviewed some who play the piano or excel in the area of visual arts.

I am certainly looking forward to working with so many qualified young people.

I know our campers will benefit from all this talent!
